This American Life

For the longest time, I wouldn't join the masses who adore this show. But this week, on my way to some fassoulia at Grandma's, I couldn't leave my car. The story was about two kids who babysat imaginary children so that they could find respite from their difficult home lives. There are countless quotes that have stayed with me, about love and abandonement and desire and sadness and strength. This is art at one of its finest, the art of sound that remains, that resonates, that fixates you, that reminds you of how blessed you are. Click here and then just listen. Listen.

Open me

I met this artist at a radio conference a few years ago. He had created a piece that was made up of a card catalog and every drawer would make a different sound. He had set it up in his apartment in New York, a whole wall of sound. Alan Berliner. He also made a film about his life long struggle with insomnia.

Listen to all the sounds around you

Aaron Ximm has been collectiing sounds from his environment (technically called Field Recordings) for several years now. He has a plethora of indistinguishable and yet ubiquitous noise to choose from and through this creates a sonic experience, one that we can experience in our own minds if we take a moment to pay attention. Along with sound, he collects images, every few moments, all day long.
